One-Planet-at-a-Time Quarterly News Update:  First Quarter, 2015

NEWS:  The Telepath Guidelines fav.me/d7p86je have now been canonized. The next set of guidelines scheduled for 2016 will address the nature of intelligence within the OPaaT universe: artificial intelligence, the limitations of organic intelligence, extradimensional intelligence, etc. As before, please direct all input to the comments section below. The Book Club selections for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters, respectively, are Arthur C. Clarke’s The Star, Larry Niven’s The Mote in God’s Eye, and Malicious-Monkey’s Ilion sunriseonilion.wordpress.com/ (also available at her dA page). Below are the winners of the Fourth Quarter Line Art Contest:

GROUP HIGHLIGHT:

Our newest affiliate is World-Craft world-craft.deviantart.com/ The thing I like most about this group is that it does a very good job of keeping a close knit ‘small group’ vibe while also showcasing impressively original artwork. Below are ten of my favorite deviations:

Here are my thoughts so far regarding the upcoming Intelligence paradigm:

Why do we need it?
1) Economics - If money is dependent on individuals' time (wages), then there will need to be some kind of limit to AI...whether that be a tech plateau like in Star Wars, or a Pandora's Box scenario like in Terminator, The Matrix, and BSG.
2) Fermi Paradox - If super-intelligent self-replicating robots are out there, then why is half the Milky Way not already swarmed by them like in the Revelation Space series or Star Trek?
3) Entertainment - too much prosperity often translates into too little conflict...and sometimes that can be bad for building stories.

Pros of super-intelligence:
1) Scifi should be about the FUTURE, not just a nuanced version of the present or Game of Thrones with ray-guns.
2) If computing power in real life exceeds what we allow based on worldbuilding, then OPaaT runs the risk of loosing relevance.

Cons of super-intelligence:
1) Once entities are allowed to be too powerful, there just isn't much room left for conflict and lazy/boring writing is more likely to occur.
2) It is difficult to imagine how super-intelligent civilizations would interact with each other.

Ideas:
1) Strike a balance between super-intelligence and modern "familiar" levels of intelligence. Maybe have an intelligence index that depends on the properties of a realm within the multiverse: 1 = Omega Point, 0.00001 = boring useless universe, 0.5 = the main universe (inspired by A Fire Upon the Deep).
2) Make intelligent robots either more expensive or less reliable than employing actual humans.
3) Ultra-advanced civilizations will opt to migrate to more desirable realms within the multiverse for the same reason humans might leave Earth for a Ba'ku-like fountain of youth paradise world.
4) Avoid Reaper/Borg/Cylon ripoffs.
